Did you know that Evangelicals and Baptists were the ones that originally pushed for church/state separation? Try reading Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists. He says it extremely simply, that the 1st Amendment builds a wall of separation between church and state. When Smith found out, he sent men to destroy the newspaper printing press and equipment. This led to the Illinois state police being called out, and Smith was arrested. It was also around this time that he disclosed to his "church elders" that God told him that polygamy was a good thing for them (he and elders and wives) to do. Some of the elders didn't like this idea, especially after Smith had already discussed the idea with some of their wives. While in Illinois, Smith convinced the state legislature to allow him to create a new town over which he could make himself mayor.
